DePuy Hip Replacement Systems Recall

DePuy Orthopaedics, a unit of Johnson and Johnson, is recalling 2 Hip Replacement Systems because of new data from the National Joint Registry (NJR) which showed higher than expected number of patients needing a second hip replacement surgery. The 2 recalled systems, totaling 93,000 units, are the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System.

The product used in the United States is the ASR XL Acetabular System, and approximately 13% of the patients need a second hip replacement surgery. This means that within 5 years of replacement surgery, 1 in 8 patients receiving the ASR XL Acetabular System need a second surgery.

Symptoms of an unsatisfactory replacement surgery with the ASR XL are component loosening, component malalignment, infection, fracture of the bone, dislocation, metal sensitivity, pain, swelling, and trouble walking. Patients need to contact the surgeon who performed the hip implant to determine if you received the ASR System.

If you received the ASR XL Acetabular System or DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System, you should take the following steps:

  1. Schedule an appointment with your surgeon to evaluate the functioning of your hip.
  2. Your surgeon may order additional blood tests and possible imaging to determine that your ASR hip device functions properly.
  3. If you are experiencing pain, difficulty walking, or other symptoms, your surgeon may recommend surgery to replace the implant.

If you do need to have an additional surgery, several options are available, and your surgeon will select the appropriate implant system.
